It's the Illinois Primary today and residents throughout the state will join their neighbors at the polls to cast their vote for the Republican or Democratic presidential candidate, as well as for several U.S. Senate and House seats. Fortunately, the chaos of this weekend's rallies will (hopefully) be replaced with relative civility, thanks in part to an anonymous, private polling process. And with tensions surrounding this recent election at an all time high, it's probably a good thing that residents will be unaware of who the person standing next to them is voting for - unless, of course, they're the button-wearing kind. However, if you'd like to know who your neighborhood is leaning towards, New York City-based Renthop, an apartment search startup, has combed through open government data to offer insights on the allegiances of every Chicago zip code. This week, Renthop's data science team analyzed campaign contribution numbers from FEC.gov and mapped this data by zip code, offering an interactive snapshot of a neighborhood's particular political views. Check out the map below and click on your neighborhood to see if you're politically in line with your community. Explained Shane Leese, Data Scientist with RentHop, in an email to Chicago Inno, "Chicago is unique because it is actually the birthplace of Hillary Clinton, the favored candidate in most national polls. Despite this, her lead is quite narrow over Bernie Sanders in terms of donor count." Some other interesting insights from Renthop include: 1. - "The State of Illinois is characteristically known to be a blue state, so it comes as no surprise that Democratic candidates Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders are leading the way in donor count and amount raised." 2. - "Looking down the Republican field, we see Marco Rubio at the front of the pack with a strong lead in amount raised." 3. - "Donald Trump does not seem well-liked in Chicago, at least not by those with money to spare. Winnetka takes top prize for giving Trump the most monetary support of any neighborhood." 4. - "Chicago’s most generous neighborhoods are, as one might expect, also the most expensive and affluent. The downtown-Mag Mile zip code of 60611 gave the most money of any with over 11% of the city's aggregate total." 5. - "Leading the way in Chicago - Hillary is a hometown favorite. Neighborhoods where Hillary had the largest share of donors were more spread out, with the South Shore and Calumet appearing on the list, along with Lincoln Park, which appears on both lists."
